Laundries don’t get much thought until they stop working for you. Then suddenly you notice every wasted corner, every awkward reach over the machine, every load of washing that has nowhere sensible to go once it’s dry. If that sounds familiar and you’re in Queanbeyan, you’re far from alone. Having renovated laundries across the region for years – and drawing on what we’ve learned across bathroom, kitchen and laundry renovations<\/a> more broadly – we’ve picked up a fairly clear picture of what tends to go wrong and, more usefully, what actually fixes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Queanbeyan Laundries Often Fall Short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Queanbeyan’s housing stock is a real mix, and that shapes what most renovations here actually involve. Older established homes around Queanbeyan East, Karabar and Crestwood were often built with laundries as an afterthought – small, boxed-in, and squeezed into whatever leftover space the original floor plan allowed. Bench space is tight, ventilation is usually poor, and storage rarely stretches beyond a single cupboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newer homes in areas like Googong tend to start from a better position since the laundry is already part of the floor plan. But “already part of the plan” doesn’t always mean well planned. We regularly walk into brand new builds where the layout is technically fine but doesn’t actually suit how the household lives – the dryer’s on the wrong side, there’s nowhere to fold, or the storage looks good on paper but doesn’t hold what people actually need it to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Problems We See Again and Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A handful of issues turn up in almost every laundry we assess, regardless of the suburb:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storage is usually the first complaint. A single cupboard and a stretch of open shelving might have been fine decades ago, but it doesn’t account for how much gets stored in a laundry now – detergents, cleaning supplies, ironing boards, spare linen, the lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workflow is the second. Sink, washer, dryer and folding space are often positioned with no real thought given to the sequence someone actually moves through when doing a load of washing. It sounds minor until you’re the one doing it three times a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plumbing catches people out more than they expect. Older Queanbeyan properties can still be running pipework that predates modern front-loading machines, and that mismatch shows up as poor drainage or inconsistent water pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ventilation is the one people notice last, and regret ignoring first. Laundries hold onto moisture more than almost any other room besides the bathroom. Without decent airflow, that moisture turns into mould, damp cabinetry, and a musty smell that no amount of cleaning quite gets rid of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there’s the wasted vertical space. Walk into most older laundries and you’ll find a wall of empty air above the bench that could easily be doing something useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting the Layout Right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If there’s one thing that determines whether a laundry renovation actually succeeds, it’s the layout. A good one follows the natural sequence of doing laundry – bringing washing in, sorting, washing, drying, folding, storing – without forcing anyone to double back or work around something in the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For smaller Queanbeyan laundries, stacking the washer and dryer vertically frees up a surprising amount of floor space, and a fold-down ironing bench can reclaim a section of bench that would otherwise sit unused most of the week. Tall, narrow cabinetry tends to work better than wide units in a tight room, mostly because it doesn’t eat into the space you need to actually move around in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larger homes have more room to play with.
